Reviewing log files is essential during troubleshooting. Often, one must sift through hundreds of lines to pinpoint the cause of the latest error message. This process becomes painstakingly difficult if one does not properly capture required information. While more logs are certainly better than none, flooding the logs with excessive information can also become difficult to decipher. Maintaining organized and clean logs significantly reduces the time spent and enhances comprehension.
Maximo offers 5 distinct logging levels, each serving to communicate different degrees of issues and urgency. Mastering the selection of the optimal logging level for each script call is a valuable skill to possess.
INFO – A message logged at INFO level indicates a general message that highlights the progress of the specific functionality that’s processed by the current thread.
DEBUG – A message logged at DEBUG level indicates a general message that provides fine-grained information about the progress of the specific functionality that is being processed by the current thread.
WARN – A message logged at WARN level indicates that the application would continue to run, but a specific functionality that’s processed by the current thread may be operating on some data that might not be appropriate.
ERROR – A message logged at ERROR level indicates that the application would continue to run, but a specific functionality that’s processed by the current thread failed and would continue to fail until the processing information is altered.
FATAL – A message logged at FATAL level indicates that the error is very severe and will cause the application not to function at all. This level is used only by the Maximo application framework code to indicate that the Maximo application failed.
An efficient approach to streamline log files and display only pertinent information for the current script involves appending the script’s title to the Maximo script call. For instance, by following the example below, you can easily filter and display the necessary results specific to your script without adjusting the auto script root logger’s log level. This method not only declutters your logs but also allows flexibility in selecting the desired logging level on-the-fly. Adopting this technique enhances log clarity, readability, and overall operational efficiency:
Example:
logger = MXLoggerFactory.getLogger(“maximo.script.helloWorld”)
logger.log(“Hello World”)
logger.info(“INFO Logging Level”)
logger.debug(“DEBUG Logging Level”)
logger.warn(“WARN Logging Level”)
logger.error(“ERROR Logging Level”)
logger.fatal(“FATAL Logging Level”)
